How To Be A “Mommy Millionaire”
Kim Lavine, creator of the Wuvit and founder of Green Daisy, Inc, started her business out of necessity. “My husband came home and told
me he was laid off,” says Kim. She’d been making a little product and giving it away as gifts, and people were calling her asking for
their own Wuvits.
As she says in her amazingly useful book Mommy Millionaire ,
“I like to say ‘the rest is history… but the reality is that what followed was years of stunning success, exciting and challenging hard
work, and the narrow escape from bankruptcy.”
To build her business, Kim and her family gave up all of the luxuries they were used to. Her millionaire mentors lived in a 1,000 square
foot rancher while they built their IT recruiting business. They didn’t have money until they sold their business. Kim lives the same
way, “I tell people that no one gets rich running their business. They get rich selling it. I’m still reinvesting my money in my
business.”
She finds that this lifestyle of living simply and building the business is hard for most people. “It takes courage to drive an old car
in this car. We have a culture of conspicuous consumption.”
Thinking about the get rich quick schemes that try to sucker work at home moms brings out her passion. “I want to put an end to this
rampant selling of overnight success in this culture. It’s a lie. It’s debilitating. It makes people feel inadequate.”
“I’ve met so many great people with great business ideas, and they never get past start,” says Kim. “If they do get past start, 95% quit
at the first crisis. If they’d only stuck it out a little bit longer. Unfortunately, they’ve succumbed to this vision of overnight
success that’s sold to us, because success sells.”
Despite these challenges, women are starting business at two times the rate of men. “There’s an old saying that women can have it all,
but not at the same time,” says Kim. “Baloney!! Being a mom is tough. I just find that being a mom offers women the ability to act on
whatever it is they need to satisfy themselves.”
In her book, Kim elaborates on her 10 Mommy Millionaire rules:
- Don’t apologize for having kids!
- Remember that when you are conducting business over the phone with other mommy entrepreneurs, it is proper and allowable to out-yell
your kids, while I out-yell mine!
- Don’t freak out over what your kids do while you are on the phone yelling over them.
- Never forget that if you’re going to be a Mommy Millionaire, you must accept the fact that you will have to burn down your house and
build another one after ten years.
- When your child care unexpectedly falls through at the last minute, take your toddlers into your attorney’s office for that
important meeting without guilt and apology.
- Accept the fact that SEX SELLS.
- Keep in mind that children are in reality evil geniuses.
- Don’t feel guilty for rushing out to buy your kid that new Nintendo GameCube game if it gives you one day of guiltless uninterrupted
work time.
- Know that in the business world the conventional wisdom is that you are considered a non-entity as a mommy.
- Remember we’re all equal in the eyes of God and our kids’ teachers.
If you’re an inventor or designer of a unique product, read “Mommy Millionaire”. It’s the best, most practical step-by-step guide for
building and running a sales business on the market today. It’s designed for moms who don’t have a degree in business and goes
step-by-step through the information you need and how to find it.
As you build your business, don’t get frustrated when you’re not an overnight success. Don’t let the stresses and problems convince you
to quit. As Kim says, “Don’t confuse excitement with stress. Go with your heart, and you’ll always be on the right path.”
