TID-BITS REGARDING E-BOOKS
All materials copyrighted.
WHO BUYS E-BOOKS?
Lots of people buy e-books and they buy them for various reasons. Some people don't like to lug around heavy books. Others like the idea
of feeling as though they live in a technological age. Some people like the idea of saving trees. And some simply like the speed in
which they can get the information they need; instead of waiting 5-7 days for shipment.
WHY BUY FROM US?
We do our best to make sure every book you receive has quality information in it. We spend a lot of time in the trenches: researching,
interviewing, editing, tweaking, and proofing. When we're done, we send our e-books to a copyeditor or book doctor for a second pair of
eyes. And finally, we listen to our readers and insert information our readers feel is missing in second, third, and fourth editions.
WHY DO AUTHORS CHOOSE TO WRITE E-BOOKS?
There is a lot of great information available via e-books, information that could have easily taken years to get published through a
traditional publisher, information that would have become obsolete or outdated had it waited a year to hit the printers, or information
that might not have a large enough market to warrant an extensive printing budget. And then, there are the masterpieces that would have
never seen the light of day, simply because they were constantly being rejected by one publisher or another, for various in-house reasons.
Another reason many authors are writing e-books is because it gives them credibility in their genre and allows them to earn a few extra
bucks. Freelance writing is hard work. It's a constant waiting game. You wait to get accepted, you wait to get published, you wait to get
your work printed, and then you wait for payment. All that waiting takes it's toll on a writer's budget. E-books allow writers to earn a
living doing what they love while still sharing the information they've absorbed with others.
A RECENT DISCUSSION ON E-BOOKS
In a recent online discussion regarding e-book, we were asked who would buy an e-book and why. Soon the discussion shifted from who would buy
an e-book, to e-book purchase experiences. The discussion went something like this:
Many readers were completely satisfied with the e-books they've purchased. Some felt they got burned. Of those that felt they got burned,
their reasons varied: Some believed the e-books were poorly designed, poorly written, and lacked any real information. One writer
purchased an e-book that was literally nothing more than one-line sentences followed by affiliate ads. Another writer purchased an e-book
that was mostly graphics, white space, and very little text. Another write purchased an e-book, but soon decided she hated the idea of
having to buy something at one price, then pay extra to print it out via her home printer.
My response went something like this:
Personally, I love e-books! I like to read and research online. I like getting information fast. I like the idea of not killing trees
and having hundreds of unsold books sitting in a warehouse somewhere. And, I like being able to only print out the information I deem
really necessary to have in print.
I buy e-books, but only non-fiction ones. I usually buy from authors who have websites or newsletters where they write most of the
content themselves. That way, I can test the author's writing style out first. If the writer writes well, provides good information, and
has what I am looking for in the newsletter or website, there's a really good chance he/she will have what I am looking for when I
purchase and read the e-book he/she has authored.
Heck, I've even purchased e-books from directory sites similar to this one. Often directory sites also have online magazines which allow
you to see the quality of information the editor accepts.
Now, there have been occasions when I have purchased an e-book from an author who had nothing more than a sales page, but those times are
rare. Some books have been worth every penny. Other books were a complete waste of my time and money. But that's the chance you take with
e-books.
I, however, never read novels or books geared towards being relaxation tools online. Those are truly reserved for the pleasure of
curling up under a nice blanket, with a cup of hot tea.
Keep smiling!
