Review

I fell in love with Anne Baldwin’s work the day I purchased and viewed her video, Telling Stories With Collage and Paint. Her collages have a wonderful balance to them: somewhat busy, somewhat serene. The colors blend well together and appear seamless—meaning you often cannot tell where one image/scene ends and another begins. And her work just speaks to the soul, as if to say, “I have a story tell and I’d love for you to hear it.”

I’ve often wished she’d come out with more instructional videos as I really enjoyed her teaching style. It’s very laid back, education, and entertaining. She’s just a joy to watch. So imagine my enthusiasm when I discovered she had written a book, and not just any book, but a book on creating mixed media collages! A book entitled, Creative Paint Workshop for Mixed Media Artist.

Immediately I engulfed myself in her book and found myself jotting down note after note (for you see it was a borrowed book) and thinking, “this is amazing, she’s expanded on her video and answered a few of my lingering questions!”

The book is filled with plenty of visual stimulation along with blurbs about why the featured piece works and sprinkled throughout each chapter are mini-projects to help you get your creative juices flowing.

“If you try to make paintings that please everyone, you will be inhibiting your own creativity and most likely repeating what others have done before.”

All-in-all, the book has nine chapters:

  1. Getting Started
  2. How to Compose
  3. Approaches to Abstract Design
  4. Experiments in Texture
  5. Layering Paint and Found Images
  6. Combining Words and Paint
  7. Working with Encaustic Materials
  8. Using Digital Photographs in Mixed Media Paintings
  9. Gallery of Special Projects

Amongst those chapters you’ll learn things like:

If you’re ready to start creating collages that are more than just “eye-candy”, if you’re ready to start creating collages that tell stories, then you’ll want to get a copy of Creative Paint Workshop for Mixed Media Artists today.
