Review
Disney’s The Fox and the Hound 2 may be called a sequel, but it doesn’t continue where the original left off. At the end of the original, Todd and Copper not only grew up, but they went separate ways. In the sequel, Todd and Copper are still young pups. If you can get past this bit of illogic, you’ll truly enjoy The Fox and the Hound 2.

In The Fox and the Hound 2, Copper has a hard time with the fact that he just doesn’t have what it takes to be a good hound dog—a dog with the sole purpose of hunting foxes for an owner who then shoots and kills what he finds. Determined to help Copper, Todd tries to teach Copper how to hunt; only to find himself being chased by Copper’s companions.

Later, safe and sound back at the farm, Copper and Todd decide to attend the county fair for a little fun and adventure. At the fair Copper is asked to sing in the The Singin’ Strays musical group.

At first Todd is excited for Copper and tries to help him achieve his newfound dream, but soon finds himself feeling left out as fame and new friendships steer Copper in another direction and away from Todd. Sad and confused, Todd is easily manipulated by one of the members of the group and ends up hurting Copper’s chances at fame. But Todd isn’t the only one confused; Copper has a real problem choosing between a new life with the musical group and his old life with Todd.

In the end, Copper and Todd realize that true friendship is about being loyal to one another regardless of where life takes you. (And as a side lesson, Cash, the musical groups’ leader, discovers that sometimes seeking fame and fortune can cost you what you love most. And the group discovers that all work and no play make for a pretty dull life.)

I really enjoyed The Fox and the Hound 2. The plot has real substance and a valuable life lesson that isn’t stuffed down our children’s throats. In fact, the life lessons in this film are shown to our children in an entertaining, yet powerful way. There are even a few moments when I caught myself laughing out loud or singing to the musical numbers.

Your Task
Ask a group of your children’s friends over for popcorn and a movie. Put in The Fox and the Hound 2 and enjoy the laughter that commences. When the video is over, ask the kids if they know what true friendship is—what makes a good friend and what makes a bad friend. Then talk about the trouble Todd and Copper faced in their friendship. Ask the kids if they’ve ever experienced a time when a friend stopped being a friend, how it made them feel, and what can be done in situations like that. Then have each child say one night thing about the kid on his/her left, and then the kid on his/her right. When everyone’s had a turn to share, do a fun activity together, like building a friendship bracelet for the girls or allowing the boys to play video games.
