The Peanuts Holiday Collection (Deluxe Edition)
Charlie Brown, Linus, Lucy, Sally, Peppermint Patty, Snoopy, and Woodstock.
When I was a little girl I looked forward to watching Charlie Brown tackle life through these holiday specials. The sappiness of the holidays never seemed to play a part in Charlie Brown’s life and I liked that. Charlie Brown was a decent kid, with a good heart, who always seemed to get a raw deal. And yet, no matter what life threw at him, he didn’t let it keep him down. He’d make a comment about how unfair life treated him then go right on living, trying to make a better life for himself. I liked that about him. It was inspiring.
The Peanuts Holiday Collection (Deluxe Edition) is a wonderful holiday classic that no child should be without. In this collection, there are three DVDs with six episodes.
It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown, 1966
It’s Halloween and once again Linus is waiting for The Great Pumpkin to arrive. As everyone leaves to go trick-or-treating, Linus spends the evening in the local pumpkin patch, anxiously awaiting the arrival of The Great Pumpkin who is to Linus what Santa Claus is to the rest of the world. When trick-or-treating ends, the gang heads over to a Halloween party. A party in which Charlie Brown has officially been invited to. There’s also a side story in this cartoon starring Snoopy as he fights the Red Barron.
This DVD comes with a short skit called, It’s Magic Charlie Brown (1981), which has Charlie Brown becoming invisible thanks to a goof up with Snoopy’s magic skit. There’s also a featurette about the making of It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown.
A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving, 1973
It’s Thanksgiving and Charlie Brown and his sister, Sally, are head to grandma’s house for dinner. There’s only one problem, Peppermint Patty has invited herself and a few of Charlie Brown’s closest friends to Thanksgiving Dinner at Charlie Brown’s house. There’s not much talk about the true meaning of the holiday in this episode, nor do the children discuss things they’re thankful for. In fact, Peppermint Patty seems a bit ungrateful when she puts down the meal Snoopy and Woodstock put together. But if we’re going to be honest here, how many kids really get the whole idea of giving thanks anyway?
This DVD comes with a short skit called, The Mayflower Voyagers (1989), which is about the historical aspect of the holiday: the Pilgrims sailing to the New World and enduring their first winter. There’s also a little featurette about the making of A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.
A Charlie Brown Christmas, 1965
It’s Christmas and Charlie Brown is disappointed in the over-commercialism of the holiday. Upon Lucy’s advice, Charlie Brown decides to direct the school play and put the real meaning back into the holiday. When the play needs a Christmas tree, Charlie Brown heads to the tree lot where he discovers a wimpy, scrawny little tree that nobody wants. Determined to save the tree, he buys it. The gang, however, isn’t happy with his choice. Determined to stand up for his beliefs, Charlie Brown insists on keeping the tree and uses it to teach the gang about the true meaning of Christmas.
This DVD comes with a short skit called, It’s Christmastime Again (1992) and a featurette on the making of A Charlie Brown Christmas. There is also a separate CD-ROM with six songs from the cartoon.
